Publish or perish! – was das Ansehen von Forschern und ihren Instituten angeht, hat dieses Sprichwort kaum an Wahrheitsgehalt eingebüßt. Standen hier meist Veröffentlichungen in Nature und Science am höchsten im Kurs, wächst mittlerweile die Bedeutung von Büchern – auch und gerade gegenüber Übersichtsartikeln. Dies gilt natürlich in gleichem Maße für Forscher in der Industrie und ihre Unternehmen. In meiner beratenden Tätigkeit für den weltweit auflagenstärksten Fachverlag ist es meine Aufgabe, Themen, Autoren und Gutachter im Bereich Astronomie und Physik zu identifizieren und zur Veröffentlichung vorzuschlagen. "Publish or perish!" — this saying has not lost much of its truth for scientists and their institutes. But while publications in journals such as Nature and Science have been ranking with the highest impact ratings, the importance of textbooks and monographs is constantly on the rise—especially when compared to the perceptance of review articles.
